Death in Custody
The following account was created as a part of the Death in Custody Campaign. To date we know of 260 deaths of Black people, people of color, and people affected by racism, while held in detention or at the hands of the police in Germany since 1990 (as of December 9, 2024).
How we conduct our research, which sources we use, and how we define key-terms can all be found in our Research Index. This research is ongoing and updated regularly. To inform us of further cases please email us at: death-in-custody@riseup.net
We are currently discussing a possible expansion of the research to include all deaths in custody and as a result of police violence, regardless of whether the victims were racialized. We are also interested in receiving information about such deaths, but for the time being we are only collecting them internally and may publish them at a later date. Further information on our discussion process can be found at research.
