We remember the Nigerian Christy Schwundeck, who was shot dead by the police in Frankfurt (Main) on May 19, 2011. She was 39 years old.

Christy Schwundeck was at the job center and asked for the money she was entitled to. When she was asked to leave, she remained seated and insisted on staying until the money due to her was paid out.

The Jobcenter employee then called the police. A short time later, the policewoman who had been called fired several shots at Christy Schwundeck from a distance of two meters. The police refused to use pepper spray, according to the public prosecutor's office, as it would have led to “irritated eyes” in a closed room, even in uninvolved persons.

On the day of the shooting, the public prosecutor's office in Frankfurt claimed that it was clearly a case of self-defense. To this day, the circumstances of Christy Schwundeck's death have neither been clarified nor have the public officials involved been held accountable. The Higher Regional Court rejected an application for enforcement by the relatives.
