We remember Nelson, who died by “suicide” in Ottweiler Prison on August 1, 2025. He was 15 years old.

According to reports, Nelson was in prison on the basis of a so-called preventive detention order. Before his death, he was held in solitary confinement there for five weeks for unknown reasons. He is also said to have been starving and beaten and kicked by guards. He then allegedly killed himself in his cell.

On August 2, one day after Nelson's death, 17 prisoners refused to return to their cells after free time as a protest. The prison called in a special police task force to quell the uprising. Preliminary proceedings were initiated against two prison officers for assault in their duties.

According to the "Saarbrücker Zeitung", the autopsy found no evidence of any external influence. However, Nelson's father reported that he could barely recognize his dead son's face because it had been disfigured by violence. Further investigation is being hampered by the fact that Nelson's body was cremated without his family being notified.
